Those Were The Days – North West

4 x 30 minute series

Return of the popular and nostalgic series that delves deep into the BBC archives, this time revealing the changing face of everyday life in the north west.

Marking the occasion of Derry/Londonderry becoming the first ever UK City of Culture, each episode is themed after a favourite song from the city; Teenage Kicks, The Town I Loved So Well, All Kinds Of Everything and Things Can Only Get Better. These classic songs begin our journey through the archives to explore the rich cultural heritage of the region.

This special series of Those Were the Days is a celebration of the unique North West spirit, as told by the favourite sons and daughters of the region. Narrated by Richard Dormer and featuring contributions from Phil Coulter, Dana, Peter Cunnah, Billy Doherty (The Undertones), Gerry Anderson, Sean Coyle and Hugo Duncan. As well as revealing archive featuring playwright Brian Friel, champion boxer Billy ‘Spider’ Kelly, US President Bill Clinton and comedian Billy Connolly.

“I think it is absolutely crucial that we hold on to unique moments in time” says music legend Dana. “Archive is invaluable” says interviewee Margo Harkin “It’s the way we know about our past and helps us to move forward” “I think that what is most important about looking back and looking through the archive of the past” says journalist Eamonn McCann “Is that I am filled with hope about what we can make of the future.”

The ‘swinging sixties’ are remembered as the decade in which a generation turned on, tuned in and dropped out. However, the reality is that for most people living in Britain the sixties were not that ‘groovy’.

Presented by Liverpool’s Queen of showbiz, Cilla Black, Cilla’s Unswung Sixties tells the real story of Britain’s popular culture in a decade synonymous with music and fashion. Drawing on her own memories and experiences Cilla is uniquely placed, as the girl next door turned superstar, to reveal what the great British public was really wearing in the 1960s, what records they bought and what they liked to do at the weekend.

Debunking myths and sidestepping stereotypes through the testimonies and archives of people who were there, The Unswung Sixties will show a very different but equally colourful decade, as experienced by ordinary men, women and families in the UK.

Cilla’s Unswung Sixties is set to be a trip down memory lane and for those who weren’t lucky enough to be there it will be a real eye opener to what the legendary decade was really like.

Tune in to see Cilla’s Unswung Sixties in March 2012 on the UK’s leading history channel, Yesterday.
