“We offer escape for people here. We offer time away to get lost in their own thoughts. To come in, to unleash issues that they’ve got. Lose themselves for a period of time in a gym.” [Billy Murray]
Opened in 1992, Belfast’s first kickboxing gym has been home to dozens of champions and hundreds of fighters.
Launching the new 2017 season of True North documentaries from BBC Northern Ireland, True North: Kick Me, hears the stories of five of the gym’s prized fighters: Cathy, Samantha, Darren, Ursula and Johnny.
The film, produced by independent production company, DoubleBand Films, is a personal journey for director Michael Lennox who has worked out in the gym himself while award-winning musician and composer David Holmes also acted as music consultant on the production.
“It’s not about me. It’s about me pushing them. You have to be selfish. It’s all about you. It’s all about you and that’s what I try to push. It’s all about my fighters.” [Billy Murray]
